The Kulkwitzer Lake campsite where I'm staying in Leipzig is about 6 miles from the city center. My arrival on Sunday was met with a downpour of rain and most shops in Germany are closed on Sundays so I spent the afternoon and evening catching up on emails and finishing the blog post about Berlin. Monday was overcast, but only a few sprinkles, so I biked into the city to wander around for the day. My first stop was the market plaza where I had a Döner kebob and was chased around by hungry wasps. Germans have a "live and let live" posture toward insects so you'll see wasps and flies at every restaurant, bakery, and café with virtually no effort to trap or kill them. I literally could not sit still with the kebob in my hand, I had to walk and eat, using the wind to my advantage in order to lose the wasps that were trailing me.

In the market paza, they were busy setting up what looked to be like a very large Christkindl Market. I wanted to sit and sketch the Thomas Church, but I couldn't find a seat with a good vantage point and the clouds looked a bit threatening at that time so I went to the Stasi Museum in the Round Corner. It was only 5.00€ for the entrance and at the reception they give you a handheld listening device that has audio for each numbered exhibit and you can explore in any order you want. There's a lot of fascinating and sometimes scary history in there.

After the museum, I nearly derailed the rest of my afternoon on my way to the Völkerschlachtdenkmal monument when I gave my rear tire a flat. Notice that I didn't say I got a flat tire. I literally let all the air out of my rear tire on accident when I tried to add some air to it. The handpump that I brought with me fits both Presta and Schrader valves. The valves on this bike are Dunlop valves, which I've never used before. With a Presta valve, you have to unscrew the lock nut on the valve stem in order to inflate it. Using the same logic, I unscrewed the lock nut on the Dunlop valve and the entire valve pin came out, causing an instantaneous and total deflation of the tire. I looked up Dunlop valves and learned that you simply apply air pressure to the valve with the pin in place to inflate the tire, but my hand pump was useless because I couldn't get a seal.
I walked my bike to the nearest gas station which luckily wasn't too far, only to find that their air pumps were made for Schrader valves (obviously, because that's what car tires use). I almost called a taxi to get me back to the campsite at that point, but I was determined to be resourceful and come up with a solution. All I really needed to do was create a good enough seal around the Dunlop valve with the slightly larger diameter Schrader connection on the pump. Next to the air pump was a heavy-duty paper towel dispenser. I tore off a piece, rolled it into a tight strip, and wrapped it around the Dunlop valve. I applied the air pump head, held it in place, and pressed the air button. My tire instantly came back to life and I was able to continue on my journey!

I got to the Völkerschlachtdenkmal (monument to the Battle of the Nations) and sat down to sketch it for a couple hours. These photos don't do its grandeur any justice because it is a really colossal structure inside and out!

I climbed the 500 steps to the top through tight corridors and spiral staircases wide enough for only one person and could see the landcape for miles in all directions.

I feel like Leipzig would have quite a bit more to explore than what I could fit in with only 2 nights here, but I'm excited to continue on the next part of my journey where I'll be meeting with the Perkams family in Kemnath (life-long friends of our family) today after I make a brief stop in Mödlareuth (a town divided by the Iron Curtain) to visit the 'Little Berlin' museum.
I'll also be visiting Döltsch, the tiny town where I grew up and went to Kindergarten, to reconnect with my childhood friend Barbara. Followed then by a visit to Bayreuth to meet Pia and her neighbors who I met at the first campsite.
