Black Forest "Schwarzwald"
It's raining at the campsite here in Freiburg this morning, so I'm updating the blog and working on inking the sketch I drew in the Starnberg Church Square. Yesterday, I ordered the bread service that the campground offers, so at 8:00am I picked up a few bread rolls still warm from the oven.
"Heute Morgen regnet es hier auf dem Campingplatz in Freiburg, also aktualisiere ich den Blog und arbeite daran, die Skizze zu tuschen, die ich auf dem Kirchplatz in Starnberg gezeichnet habe. Gestern habe ich den Brotservice bestellt, den der Campingplatz anbietet, und so habe ich um 8:00 Uhr ein paar noch ofenwarme Brötchen abgeholt."
I arrived in the Black Forest on Thursday afternoon around 16:30 after a 5 hour drive. Along the way, I stopped in a small town named Welden where I visited the location of the 10"x10" property that I own. My former girlfriend, Emilee, bought the plot through Happy Land Gifts as a Christmas present last year. On the land title, it gives the GPS coordinates so it was a bit of a treasure hunt. There was no clear signage, just a large field at the end of a residential street on a hill that overlooks the town. There was a wooden bench and a fire pit hidden behind a grove of trees where the GPS pin lead me to.
"Ich kam am Donnerstagnachmittag gegen 16:30 Uhr nach einer fünfstündigen Autofahrt im Schwarzwald an. Unterwegs machte ich Halt in einem kleinen Ort namens Welden, wo ich mir das Grundstück mit den Maßen 25cm x25 cm ansah, das mir gehört. Meine ehemalige Freundin Emilee hatte das Grundstück letztes Jahr über „Happy Land Gifts“ als Weihnachtsgeschenk gekauft. Auf der Grundbuchurkunde waren die GPS-Koordinaten angegeben, sodass es ein bisschen wie eine Schatzsuche war. Es gab keine eindeutige Beschilderung, nur ein großes Feld am Ende einer Wohnstraße auf einem Hügel mit Blick auf die Stadt. Dort, wohin mich die GPS-Koordinaten führten, standen eine Holzbank und eine Feuerstelle, versteckt hinter einem kleinen Wäldchen."
Yesterday I joined a guided walking tour of old-town Freiburg with about 15 other people. The tour was completely in Spanish. I knew that when I booked it, but since it was the only one offered that day, I took it. Using the interpereter app, I was able to follow along with what the guide was explaining about the town. I learned that a lot of Freiburg was destroyed in WWII, but the large cathedral which took over 300 years to build was miraculously untouched.
Interestingly, there are no pedestrian crossing zones, so you just cross the street wherever you want but you have watch out for cyclists, cars, the tram, and the many open gutters (Freiburger Bächle) that carry water of the Dreisam through the countless alleyways into the canals.
"Gestern habe ich zusammen mit etwa 15 anderen Leuten an einer geführten Stadtführung durch die Freiburger Altstadt teilgenommen. Die Führung fand komplett auf Spanisch statt. Das wusste ich schon bei der Buchung, aber da es an diesem Tag die einzige angebotene Führung war, habe ich sie mitgemacht. Mithilfe der Übersetzungs-App konnte ich den Erklärungen des Stadtführers zur Stadt gut folgen. Ich habe erfahren, dass ein Großteil von Freiburg im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört wurde, aber die große Kathedrale, deren Bau über 300 Jahre dauerte, blieb wie durch ein Wunder unversehrt.
Interessanterweise gibt es keine Fußgängerüberwege, sodass man die Straße einfach dort überquert, wo man möchte, aber auf Radfahrer, Autos, die Straßenbahn und die vielen offenen Rinnen (Freiburger Bächle) achten muss, die das Wasser der Dreisam durch die unzähligen Gassen in die Kanäle leiten."
The limestone cobbled streets with inlayed emblems were particularly impressive. And of course I couldn't visit Freiburg without having one of their famous "Freiburger Lange Rote" sausages!
"Besonders beeindruckend waren die mit Wappen verzierten Kalksteinpflasterstraßen. Und natürlich konnte ich Freiburg nicht besuchen, ohne eine der berühmten „Freiburger Lange Rote“-Würstchen zu probieren!"
